Short answer: yes. Even though modern browsers support PNG and SVG favicons, the classic .ico format still matters for older browsers, bookmarks, and desktop shortcuts. Having a proper multi-size ICO file means your logo looks sharp at every size — from a tiny 16×16 browser tab to a 256×256 Windows shortcut icon.
For a website favicon, 16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 are the most important. If you also want it usable as a desktop app icon, throw in 128×256 as well. The defaults we checked are a good starting point for most sites.
Technically no, but it really should be. ICO sizes are always square (e.g., 32×32), so a non-square image will get distorted. Either crop your image to a square beforehand using our Crop tool, or make sure the important part of your logo is in the centre.
Yes — if you use a PNG with a transparent background, the transparency will carry over into the ICO file. This is great for logos with no background, as they'll sit cleanly on any colour.
Nope. Everything happens right in your browser. Your image never leaves your device, which is why this tool is as fast as it is.
